Qualitative
The quality (ex. colour, texture, size, ect)
Quantitative
The number (ex. measurements, temperature, density)
Physical properties
State
Colour
Texture
Lustre (solid only)
Hardness (can it be scratched) (solid only)
Malleability (can it be bent) (solid only)
Ductility (can it be stretched) (solid only)
Viscosity: (liquid only) can it pour easily? Yes, non-viscous. No, viscous.
Oder
Taste (DO NOT USE IN LAB)
Form (under microscope) same, crystalline. Random, Amorphous.
Conductivity
Characteristic: unique to each substance (boiling point, melting point, freezing point.)
Density
Physical change examples
cutting
Breaking
dissolving
Chemical changes examples
Cooking
Rusting
rotting
Classification of matter
Solid:
Constant shape and volume
Liquid
Constant volume and can change shape
Gas
Can change shape and volume
3rd wire (electrical outlet)
Ground:
A pathway to the ground (Earth) to rebalance extra electrons
Ontario electricity use
Ontario mainly uses Nuclear and hydroelectricity
Series circuit
One pathway, many loads
More loads = more current
Resistance = less current
Starts and ends with the power supply
All on or all off
Parallel circuit
Many paths, one load per path
More loads = less resistance
Broken path = everything works
Examples of static electricity
Socks on carpet
Drying laundry
Applications of static electricity:
1. To clean air
2. Spray paint
3. Photocopiers
4. Electrostatic speakers
Inner planets
Mercury
Venus
Earth
Mars
Motions of the Earth
Revolution: 365 days
Rotation: 24h
Exoplanet
Orbits other stars
6200+ discovered June 2026
Abiotic vs. Biotic
Abiotic:
Non-living thing
Biotic:
Living things
biodiversity
Variety of animal species
Community vs population
Community:
Different species
Population:
One species
Carrying capacity
When a population stabilizes and is the max an environment can support
What can cities do to become more sustainable?
Green Building:
Good insulation
“Green” roofs (plants
Solar panels
Low energy appliances
Clean energy systems:
Solar
Wind
LED street lights
Sustainable transportation:
Electric buses
Subway (not cars)
Bikes lanes
Car-free zones
Charging stations (EVs)
Waste management:
Encouraging recycling
Composting
Ban single use plastics
Urban green spaces:
Parks
Community farm/gardens
Tree planting
Rooftop gardens
What are your thoughts on sport fishing?
Sport fishing and hunting is unethical
Sport fishing:
Hooks damage fishes mouths causing injuries that might affect its hunting disrupting the food web
Fish are under stress and can lead to death
Releasing the fish into the water can still cause injuries
Fish can get infections from hook injuries
Better than sport hunting because the fish have a chance of survival after being released
Sport hunting:
Killing animals for no reason
Animals can get injured trying to escape and have a long painful death
Can disrupt food webs if too many of one species is killed and can lead to extinction of animal species
How can I tell a solar eclipse from a lunar eclipse?
Solar:
Less common and can only be seen from specific locations
Can be dangerous to our eyes
Happens when the moon covers the sun and casts its shadow on Earth and everything becomes dark
Only happens for a few minutes
Lunar:
More common and can be seen form any location
Often known as a blood moon or a strawberry moon
Can last for hours
Happens when the Earth covers the sun casting its red light onto the moon
Name all 8 planets and at least 5 moons from our solar system
Planets:
Mercury
Venus
Earth
Mars
Jupiter
Saturn
Uranus
Neptune
Moons:
IO
Titan
The Moon
Europa
Ganymede
Callisto
