Mercator projection
The most common map projection, although Robinson or Winkel Tripel are also used in modern Canadian textbooks to reduce distortion.
Abyssal zone
The zone at the bottom of the sea that contains a high concentration of metals; also referred to as the Benthic zone, Hydrothermal vents, or Abyssal plains.
Natural resource
A material or substance found in nature that can be utilized for economic gain.
Non-renewable resource
A resource that could take centuries to replace itself.
Grassland biome
The biome where agriculture in Canada is mostly located, specifically in the Interior Plains and Prairies.
Agriculture
The practice of farming, including cultivation of the soil for growing crops and rearing animals to provide food, wool, and other products.
Commercial agriculture
A type of farming more common in developed nations, also known as Industrial farming.
Subsistence agriculture
A type of farming more common in developing nations.
Agribusiness
Commercial agriculture characterized by the integration of different steps in the food-processing industry, usually through ownership by large corporations.
Livestock farming
The practice of raising animals for food, also known as Pastoralism or Animal husbandry.
Organic food
Food that contains no GMOs, artificial preservatives, synthetic chemical fertilizers, pesticides, or herbicides.
Food desert
An area that has limited access to affordable and nutritious food, often due to low income or a lack of grocery stores nearby.
Food insecurity
A condition most statistically affecting low-income households, Indigenous populations, and single-parent families.
Food security
Having control over and access to the food that you need.
Rice
The plant that contributes most to greenhouse gases due to large amounts of methane emitted from anaerobic microbes in flooded paddies.
Enteric fermentation
The process by which cows and sheep release methane gas produced by microbes during digestion, specifically through belching or burping.
Livestock / Cattle farming
The sector contributing to most greenhouse gas production in agriculture through a combination of enteric fermentation and manure management practices.
The Prairies
A location in Canada, such as southern Saskatchewan or Alberta, that is NOT a major place for the forestry industry.
Ministry of Natural Resources
The government department that awards contracts and controls the land; also known as Crown Land management departments.
Primary sector operators
Private lumber companies involved in the direct extraction of natural resources.
Secondary economic activity
Manufacturing operations such as processing mills, pulp, and paper facilities.
Tertiary economic activity
The sector that sells products to consumers, including retailers, lumber yards, and hardware stores.
