Where is squamous epithelium typically located in the body?
Inner surface of mouth, oesophagus, blood-vessels, and alveoli
What is the structure of squamous epithelium?
Thin, small, flat cells that form a semipermeable membrane
What is the primary function of squamous epithelium?
Selective transport of substances
Which type of epithelium is found in the outer layer of skin and consists of many layers of cells?
Stratified epithelium
What are the functions of stratified epithelium?
Prevention of wearing of organs and protection of organs
Describe the structure and location of glandular epithelium.
Located in the inner layer of skin, etc.; its structure consists of cells containing vesicles packed with secretory material
What substances does glandular epithelium secrete?
Sweat, oil (scbum), and mucus
Where is columnar epithelium found and what are its functions?
Located in the inner surface (mucosa) of the intestine and alimentary canal; functions include secretion of digestive juice and absorption of nutrients
What is the characteristic structure of columnar epithelium?
Column-like tall cells where the upper free surface bears folds made of these cells at places of absorption
What defining feature is found on the upper free surface of ciliated epithelium cells?
Minute hair-like processes
What is the function of ciliated epithelium in the respiratory tract?
Push mucus and air forward to keep the air passage free
In which locations can cuboidal epithelium be found?
Tubules of kidney (nephron) and salivary gland
What are the functions of cuboidal epithelium?
Reabsorption of useful materials from urine and secretion of saliva
