preterite vs past perfect

- preterite: completed past action

- past perfect: an action that already happened BEFORE another action

Ya __________ (escribir) el ensayo cuando el profesor lo pidió.

había escrito

Este año, nosotros __________ (viajar) mucho.

hemos viajado

Para el próximo mes, yo __________ (leer) ese libro.

habré leído

¿__________ tú (romper) la ventana? (today)

past signal words

- cuando (when)

- antes de (before)

- después de (after)

- ya (already — in the past)

present signal words

- hoy (today)

- esta semana / este año

- ya (already)

- todavía / aún (yet/still)

- alguna vez (ever)

- nunca (never)

future signal words

- para (by)

- para entonces (by then)

- para mañana / para el viernes

- (no signal → guessing tone)

past perfect mental clue

Go back to the past... then go back one MORE step

present perfect mental clue

It happened, but we're still in that time period

future perfect mental clue

- Something will be finished before a future time

- You're making a guess

If the time is finished, don't use present perfect.

use preterite

Ayer / el año pasado → NEVER present perfect

Hoy / esta semana → present perfect

When you see a blank:

- Look for a time word

- If none → look for another verb

Then decide:

- Another past verb? → Past perfect

- Future deadline? → Future perfect

- Still "today/this week"? → Present perfect
