New cards

Senior gaurds

Who's responsibility is it to make certain the stands backpack is picked up immediately after the morning meeting and returned to headquarters at the end of each day?

52
New cards

The catch

Grip the oar handles while seated. The feet should be placed on the edge of the sert directly in front of the rower. Bend knees while les ing forward from the waist. Arms should be fully extended with the hands moving toward the stern of the boat. The hands should pass the thaw pins before the blades are placed in the water.

53
New cards

The pull

Push off with the legs. Lean back toward the bow of the boat while pulling the blades of the oars toward the stern. Arms should remain locked. The power of the stroke comes from the legs, buttocks, and back, not the arms.

54
New cards

The layback

Continue the stroke until Lea int back at approximately a 135 degree angle to the water. Just before completion of the stroke, the arms should break. Proper lay ack will allow the tower to maximize the inertia created through the stroke. In other words, it will allow the boat to "run" (glide) more efficiently. Rough surf conditions will require a shorter layback.

55
New cards

The recovery

Return to the catch position. The time radio should be 1 (recovery) to 3 (pull and layback)

56
New cards

Checking the boat

An action that hinders the maximization of the boat's "run"

57
New cards

Skying the oars

Returning the Lars to the catch position at a level too high above the wagers surface

58
New cards

Digging the oars

Placing the oar blades too far below the surface of the water

59
New cards

Splashing the catch

The placement of the oar blades in the water before the recovery is complete

60
New cards

Pulling with arms

Breaking the arms during the pull, thus, using arm strength instead of back, legs, and butt to row

61
New cards

Exaggerated layback

An over application of the layback principle. Often used during race competition, ex averaging the layback requires the weaker abdominal muscles to complete the pull and begin recovery. Be careful not to jerk to the catch position, resulting in a checking of the boat

62
New cards

Favoring the finish

During the layback phase, the shoulder and arm of one side travels a greater distance. This results in greater power to that side.

63
New cards

Rounded back

Proper rowing form dictates a flat back with the head up. A rounding if the back will decrease power

64
New cards

The bow

The front of the boat

65
New cards

The stern

The back end of the boat

66
New cards

90 degrees

What degree angle should the bow of the boat cut through the waves when rowing through the surf

67
New cards

Stern first

When returning to shore, rowing the boat in....is the safest means.

68
New cards

Alternating swim stroke

Which swim stroke should you be doing while paddling from the prone position?

69
New cards

Prone position

This position would be most commonly used when managing the surf or lading across the open wager against strong wind or heavy chop.

70
New cards

Paddling from the knees

This stroke is most appropriate when trying to locate the victim on the rescue approach; particularly in high seas, and paddling with the wind.

71
New cards

80%

What percent of all ocean wager rescues are caused by rip currents?

72
New cards

Rip current

Signs of this include...

1. Choppy waves

2. Muddy color due to the bottom sand picked up as it's rushed out to sea

3. Foam sediment frequently seen being transported away from shore line

73
New cards

Waves rushing up a sloping beach

This causes a rip chrrent

74
New cards

Lateral current

75
New cards

Wind and surf

90
New cards

Target tactics

When planning entry into the water, a gaurd should take long shore currents into account. Approaching the victim "with water flow" will save valuable time.

91
New cards

Rips

A gaurd must be able to recognize rio currents and use then whenever possible to reach a victim more quickly

92
New cards

Proper angle

Taking the "flow" into account, a gaurd shoukd use thé route with the shortest distance of water time. Never cut the corner and end up running in waist deep water for an extended period.

93
New cards

Porpoise

This consists of diving, grabbing the bottom, pulling forward, regaining footing, pushing off the bottom, and diving again.
