Physical Education
An integral part of the general education process that contributes to an individual’s awareness and understanding of the elements and dimensions of movement and forms the basis for learning sport skills.
Sport
A vehicle for the enhancement of motor skills governed by formal or informal rules that involve competition, pursued for recreation or reward, and promoting healthy lifestyle practices.
Ideal Caribbean Person
A concept articulated by CARICOM Heads of Government referring to an individual with the capacity to control, improve, maintain, and promote physical, mental, social, and spiritual well-being.
Organization of Body Structure
The hierarchical sequence of the human body: Cells -> Tissues -> Organs -> Systems -> Organisms.
Integumentary System
The system consisting of the skin, hair, nails, and associated glands.
Skeletal System
The body system comprised of bones and joints that provides structure, function, growth, and movement.
Heart Rate
The number of times the heart beats per minute as part of the circulatory system's function.
Stroke Volume
The volume of blood pumped from the left ventricle per beat.
Cardiac Output
The total volume of blood pumped by the heart per minute.
Tidal Volume
The amount of air inspired or expired during a normal breath.
Vital Capacity
The maximum amount of air a person can expel from the lungs after a maximum inhalation.
Residual Volume
The amount of air remaining in the lungs after a forced exhalation.
Homeostasis
The maintenance of a constant internal environment by the body, related to the excretory system's function.
Reflex Actions
Involuntary and nearly instantaneous movements in response to a stimulus, controlled by the nervous system.
Health-Related Fitness
Fitness components including strength, cardiovascular endurance, muscular endurance, flexibility, and body composition.
Performance-Related Fitness
Fitness components including speed, power, agility, balance, reaction time, and coordination.
Progression
A principle of training that involves gradually increasing the workload to improve fitness.
Specificity
A principle of training stating that training should be relevant and appropriate to the sport for which the individual is training.
Reversibility
A principle of training where any adaptation that takes place as a result of training will be reversed when training stops.
Overload
A principle of training where the body is pushed beyond its normal limits to force adaptation.
Fartlek Training
A training method that involves varying the intensity or speed of the workout to improve both aerobic and anaerobic systems.
Hypertrophy
The increase and growth of muscle cells as a response to training.
Atrophy
The wasting away or decrease in muscle development due to lack of use.
Cognitive Phase
The first phase of skill learning where the performer is trying to understand the requirements of the task.
Associative Phase
The second phase of skill learning where the fundamental movements are refined through practice.
Autonomous Phase
The final phase of skill learning where the skill is performed automatically with little conscious thought.
Isotonic Contraction
A muscle contraction where the muscle changes length, either shortening (concentric) or lengthening (eccentric).
Isometric Contraction
A muscle contraction where the muscle tension increases but the muscle length remains the same.
RICE
A procedure for treating common sport-related injuries: Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation.
Wellness
A health-related term referring to the state of being in good physical and mental health.
Malnutrition
A condition that results from eating a diet in which nutrients are either not enough or are too much such that the diet causes health problems.
Anorexia
An eating disorder characterized by an intense fear of gaining weight and a distorted perception of weight.
Bulimia
An eating disorder characterized by binge eating followed by purging.
Binging
An eating disorder characterized by consuming large amounts of food in a short period of time.
Hooliganism
A social issue in sport involving violent or rowdy behavior by spectators.
Competition Director
The person ultimately responsible for the conduct of a sport event, convening meetings, and selecting the competition format.
Competition Manager
The person primarily responsible for the conduct of the game on the day of competition and ensuring committee decisions are executed.
Equipment Manager
The official responsible for the inventory, maintenance, and setup of equipment for a sport event.
Hypothermia
A condition where the body's temperature falls below 35∘C.
Concussion
A sport-related injury involving unconsciousness, disorientation, and memory loss following a blow to the head.
Annotate
To add a brief note to a label, usually a simple phrase or a few words only.
Define
To state concisely the meaning of a word or term, including the defining equation or formula where relevant.
