Meji Restoration

Era of Japanese westernization after which Japan emerged as a worldwide power.

  • Building of railways and steamships

  • Military services among all males

  • Abolishment among Samauri class and the Feudal System

Causes: Isolation of Japan during the Tokugawa Shogunate and the deliberate attempt to westernize while strengthening japans imperial traditions. Pressure from western powers. Materials available from western powers.

Effect: Increased cultural creativity, nationalism and rituals aimed at developing national identity. (Ex. Military pageantry)

Took out western powers, quick westernized culture, deafened China from Korea and Japan and now imperial power.

Monroe Doctrine

A address that states the western hemisphere was off-limits to European aggression.

The U.S. was not enough of a superpower to make sure this happened so Britain fearful or Spain trying to expand its empire again they they agreed to help back the U.S..

Effect: European powers had Ecnomic power but no territorial claims.

Angered some Latin American countries who saw this as U.S. Imperialism(Even though they benefited at times)

Roosevelt Corollary to the Monroe Doctrine

Provided the United States would intervene in financial disputes between European powers and countries in the Americas.

Cause: Spain sent war ships to Venezuela after they didn’t pay loans

Latin American countries weren’t happening becuase this was a form of imperialism(even though they benefited at times)
