• at least 5.5m high - dropped to 3.5 m in the front

• front formed the rostra Julia

Forum of Julius Caesar

• inspired by the old Forum in shape and length

• approx. 115m × 45m

• double colonades on three sides

• axial design

• offices/shops on the side

• reconstruction of the curia to be closer to the forum (where Senate met)

• Temple of Venus Genetrix

Temple of Venus Genetrix

• vowed in 48 BC to Venus Victrix (same as Temple in Pompey’s theatre)

• later re-dedicated to Venus Genetrix

• decorated with antique paintings, engraved gems, etc.

• cella lined with two superimposed colonnades

• friezes from lower order showing Venus playing with spoils of war

Forum of Augustus

• dedicated in an incomplete state in 2 BC

• Temple of Mars Ultor vowed in 42 BC

Mausoleum of Augustus

• originally set in a sacred precinct between the Via Flaminia and the river bank with green spaces open tot he public

• completed 28 BC

• concentric concrete walls

• first 3 walls bounded by buttresses

• 4th wall opening up into vaulted corridor, leading to burial chamber

• porous walls to decrease weight

Burial Chamber:

• circular hall around concrete pillar

  • urn of Augustus inside the pillar

• rectangular recesses for funerary urns

Inspiration

• 3 potential routs: Tumulus (Etruscan/Asia Minor); Mausoleum (King Mausolus); Mausoleum of Alexander the Great
