Dissociation
The splitting of a substance into ions.
Neutralization
The process where an acid and a base react to form water and a salt.
pH Scale
A scale from 0 to 14 where 7 is neutral, acids have a pH less than 7, and bases have a pH greater than 7.
H+ ion
Hydrogen ion found in acids.
OH- ion
Hydroxide ion found in bases.
Brønsted-Lowry
Acid donates a proton, base accepts a proton.
Alkali
Bases soluble in water like sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide.
Strong Acid
Acid that completely dissociates in an aqueous solution.
Weak Acid
Acid that partially dissociates in an aqueous solution.
Strong Base
Hydroxides that fully ionize in aqueous solutions.
