Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs)
The second most common cause of death from infection, affecting eleven million people treated annually.
Gram-negative aerobic bacilli
Bacteria commonly responsible for UTIs, especially Escherichia coli.
Indwelling urinary catheter
A catheter that remains in place for continuous drainage; associated with increased risk of nosocomial infections.
Cystoscopy
A diagnostic procedure used to examine the bladder and urethra.
Fosfomycin
An antibiotic used for single-dose treatment of UTIs, inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis.
Nitrofurantoin
An antibiotic that interferes with several bacterial enzyme systems, used to treat UTIs.
Overactive Bladder Syndrome
A condition characterized by urgency, frequency, and nocturia, often affecting adults over 65.
Anticholinergic Agents
Drugs that block cholinergic receptors in the bladder, reducing urgency and frequency of contractions.
Mirabegron
A beta-3 adrenergic agent that relaxes the detrusor muscle, increasing bladder capacity for OAB treatment.
Phenazopyridine
A urinary agent that produces a local anesthetic effect, relieving pain and urgency associated with UTIs.
