whats the difference between central and peripheral nervous system
central: only brain and spinal cord
peripheral: all other nerves that branch out from cns
what are the main functional divisions of the peripheral nervous system
sensory and motor
whats the difference between these divisions
Sensory: has receptors and transmits the infor from receptors to cns
Motor: transmits information from cns to the rest of the body through effectors
what are the 2 functional divisions of the sensory nervous system and whats the difference between them?
Somatic: receives info from the skin, fascia, joints, skeletal muscles, special senses
Visceral:Receives info from the viscera
what are the 2 functional divisions of the motor nervous system and whats do they do
Somatic: controls voluntary muscles
Autonomic: controls involuntary muscles like the cardiac muscles
what are the 2 divisions of the autonomic motor system
sympathetic: fight or flight
parasympathetic: rest and digest
name the functions of the nervous system
sensory input, integration, motor output
neuroglia vs neurons
Neuroglia: cells that are the supportive scaffolding and protect the neurons. they do not send nerve impulses. Ex: scwhann cells
Neurons: transmit eletrical and chemical signals
what are schwann cells
They are cells that wrap around the nerve fiber (axon) and made of myelin
what is myelin
it is a protein and lipid material that the schwann cell is made of
what is a node of ranvier
it is the gaps in between the schwann cells where there is no myelin sheath to insulate the electrical impulses. This allows for saltatory conduction
