the functions of blood
transport, regulation, and protection
what four objects does blood transport throughout the body?
oxygen, nutrients/glucose, waste (Co2 removed from cells, N2 removed from kidneys), hormones
What regulatory functions does blood have?
contains buffers (helps regulate ph)
adequate fluid volume
regulates body temp by obsorbing + distributing heat
what 2 ways does blood protect us?
1) prevents blood loss: platelets and plasma proteins initiate clot formation, halting blood loss
2) prevents infection: white blood cells defend the body against bacteria
blood is a tissue that contains different types of blood cells and a fluid matrix called what?
plasma and formed elements
when you spin a sample of blood in a centrifuge it gets divided into 3 regions. what is contained in the 3 regions from top to bottom?
top: plasma
med: buffy coat
bottom: erythocytes
what property of water allows plasma to perform its transportation function?
it’s role as a universal solvent
Erythrocytes is the technical name for what type of blood cell?
Red Blood Cells (RBC’s)
what is the function of the protein spectrin in RBCs?
transporting respiratory gases (oxygen + Co2)
what is the function of the protein hemoglobin in RBC’s?
transports oxygen
what 3 structural characteristics make RBS’s ideal for transporting gases?
it’s small disc shape
its over 97% hemoglobin, the molecule that binds/transports resp. gases
doesn’t consume any oxygen it carries
what element is found within each heme group of hemoglobin that binds the oxygen for transport?
an iron ion
blood vessels
veins and artieries
veins
takes blood towars the hearttowards
artieries
takes blood away from the heart
capillaries
smallest blood vessels, where gas exchange occurs
blue blood vessels
de-oxygenated blood
red blood vessels
oxygenated blood
