Describe and locate
Tayrona national park is located on the north coast of Colombia adjacent to the Caribbean Sea. Near to the town of Santa Marta.
why people visit the national park
Pristine beaches. Endemic Wildlife. High Biodiversity. Water sports.
Explain how the park is economically sustainable
You have to pay an entrance fee to the park,
This is economically sustainable because money is then used for conservation in the area and the management of the park,
This then ensues tourists will continue to visit the park,
Therefore helping them meet their $800,000 yearly running costs.
Explain how the park is socially sustainable
Local populations are able to set up businesses supplying food to restaurants,
They can also set up businesses working directly with tourists e.g. as guides,
This is socially sustainable because local people have a reliable source of income,
As a result they can improve their standard of living e.g. luxury items such as labour saving devices
Explain how the park is environmentally sustainable
Cars are banned in much of the park so tourist use horses to travel. Costs about £12 to get your gear carried to your campsite
This is environmentally sustainable because this limits noise and air pollution,
This then ensures wildlife are not disturbed and continue with their natural behaviour
Therefore ensure population levels don't decline
How successful are these strategies? (Boardwalk)
Boardwalks have been constructed into the rainforest making it more accessible to tourists;
therefore increasing the number of visitors to the park (450,000 in 2017),
resulting in Tayrona becoming the second most visited park in Colombia;
therefore there is a reliable source of income making it economically sustainable.
How successful are these strategies? (Los ciruelos)
In 2013 construction of the 'Los Ciruelos' tourist project was stopped
due to construction taking place on top of grounds sacred to Kankuamo peoples
therefore preventing conflict; as a result it is socially sustainable.
How successful are these strategies? (closure)
The park was closed for one month in 2015 and 2017;
therefore allowing time for environmental and spiritual healing as requested by the indigenous tribes e.g. Kogui people;
therefore respecting local peoples rights and preserving the rainforest;
meaning it is both environmentally and socially sustainable.
