Lateral Separation
Separation applied by requiring operation on different areas or geographic locations determined by ATS surveillance systems, NAVAIDs, or visual reference to the ground.
Fly By Turns
A turn initiated prior to the waypoint (up to 20NM before) based on a calculated radius; the aircraft track is expected to be on the inside of the waypoint.
Flyover Turns
A turn where the aircraft comes to the overhead of the waypoint before initiating the turn onto the next leg; the track is expected to be on the outside of the waypoint.
Geographical Separation (Visual Restriction)
Position information derived from visual reference to the ground shall not be used for lateral separation purposes if the aircraft is operating above FL100.
175KnotsIAS and less (Turboprops)
For non-holding aircraft, the protected airspace radius from the holding fix is 8NM at 6000 feet, increasing to 12NM at 14000 feet.
230KnotsIAS and less (Jets)
For non-holding aircraft, the protected airspace radius from the holding fix is 15NM at 6000 feet, increasing to 18NM at 14000 feet.
RNAV 1 Track Separation
Lateral separation of departing/arriving aircraft exists where the distance between tracks is not less than 7NM.
RNP 1, RNP APCH, or RNP AR APCH Track Separation
Lateral separation of departing/arriving aircraft exists where the distance between tracks is not less than 5NM.
Lateral Separation Measurement
Separation is measured between the routes and segments along which two aircraft fly, not between the aircraft themselves.
SLOP (Strategic Lateral Offset)
A procedure where pilots may offset from the centre line of their cleared route up to 2NM right-of-track without notifying ATC.
SLOP Altitude Mandate (Reykjavik CTA and Bodo OCA)
Aircraft shall not apply Strategic Lateral Offset Procedures below F285 in these areas.
GNSS Waypoint Definition
When waypoints use latitude and longitude, only half and whole degrees shall be used (e.g., 66N040W, 7730N032W).
7 NM GNSS Separation
Minima used below F285 if both aircraft are in direct contact with ATC on VHF (DCPC) and meet specific climb/descent or parallel track criteria.
23 NM Separation Criteria
Requires aircraft to be RNP 4, RCP 240, and RSP 180 approved with ADS-C position reports at Figure of Merit (FOM) 6 or higher.
Iridium SATCOM Coverage
Under 23NM separation, this equipment allows separation to be applied in all of BIRD.
Inmarsat SATCOM Coverage
Under 23NM separation, this equipment allows separation to be applied only at and south of 80∘N.
NAT HLA Certification Indicator
Indicated by the letter X (MNPS) in Flight Plan Item 10.
15 NM Domestic Airspace Reservation
The minimum lateral separation applied if the agency controlling the reserved airspace has confirmed in writing it will confine activity within the reserved airspace.
30 NM Oceanic Airspace Reservation
Applied between an aircraft/moving reservation and the limit of a stationary reservation if the aircraft meets NAT HLA MNPS and the agency guarantees to confine activities.
120 NM Separation (Oceanic Airspace Reservation)
Applied when the aircraft does NOT meet NAT HLA MNPS and the requesting agency has NOT guaranteed to confine its activities.
