Chlamydia
A bacterial infection that can cause serious reproductive health issues, often asymptomatic in women.
Asymptomatic
Having no symptoms; a condition wherein individuals may not show signs of infection.
Cervix
The lower part of the uterus that opens into the vagina.
Erythematous
Characterized by redness of the skin or mucous membranes.
Azithromycin
An antibiotic typically used in a single dose to treat chlamydia.
Doxycycline
An antibiotic used as an alternative treatment for chlamydia if azithromycin is not suitable.
Erythromycin eye ointment
An antibiotic treatment administered to newborns to prevent blindness from chlamydia or gonorrhea.
Epididymitis
Inflammation of the epididymis, which can lead to infertility if untreated.
PID (Pelvic Inflammatory Disease)
An infection of the female reproductive organs that can cause severe abdominal pain and fertility issues.
Antibiotic resistance
The ability of bacteria to withstand the effects of an antibiotic that they were once sensitive to.
HPV (Human Papillomavirus)
A viral infection that is very common and can lead to genital warts and cervical cancer.
HSV (Herpes Simplex Virus)
A virus causing sores; type one typically leads to cold sores, while type two affects the genital area.
Acyclovir
An antiviral medication commonly used to manage herpes simplex virus infections.
Group B strep
A type of bacteria that is part of normal flora but can cause severe infection in newborns.
Bacterial vaginosis
A condition caused by an imbalance of bacteria in the vagina, potentially classified as an STI.
Candida
A type of fungus; when it overgrows in the vagina, it causes a yeast infection.
Trichomonas
A sexually transmitted parasitic infection that can cause frothy discharge.
