The ABC method of Crises Intervention:
A - Achieving contact with the person in crisis B - Boiling down the problems to its essentials C - Coping with the problem
Birth to three years
no comprehension
Three to five years
unable to understand the finality of death; death is like sleep or taking a long journey
Five to nine years
may understand that death is final but may not accept it as something that happens to everyone; (may fail to adequately mourn)
often personify death (i.e., boogeyman) (afraid the deceased will get out of the casket)
Nine years and above
understands death as both final and inevitable.
Chronic grief
excessive in duration (it becomes a ritual and cycle that is hard to break) -woman lost a husband and every morning sits in his chair to think about him -They may make statements like, “I’ll never recover.” -Often there is a linking object that the survivor holds or touches on a regular basis (picture, blanket, shirt, etc…) -They yearn for a relationship that never was
Delayed grief
inhibited, suppressed or postponed (After years the grief is as fresh as if it had been a recent death.) -Sometimes delayed grief response is seen after a second loss when the grieving process is not complete from the first loss.
Exaggerated grief
the reaction to the current experience is excessive & disabling. The person may experience panic attacks, phobic behavior, or an anxiety disorder (excessive depression, or excessive anxiety that may cause the person to be dysfunctional.) (May begin having severe physical ailments) -They may have psychiatric disorders such as depression & phobias. -They may read the obituaries every day, frequently mentioning death in general conversation, wear black, saying they deserve to die too, or they should have died instead.
Masked grief
Experience symptoms and behaviors, but do not recognize that they are related to the loss (sometimes stems from unresolved grief in childhood). The grief is usually masked as a physical symptom, similar to those suffered by the deceased during their last illness. -Rarely cries, does not show anger, and usually throws off guilt. -They appear to be void of emotion and they focus on themselves because their ego cannot withstand the strain of mourning.
