Amendments

First Amendment

Protects freedom of speech, religion, press, assembly, and petition. It allows people to express themselves without government interference.

Second Amendment

Grants the right to keep and bear arms. It allows individuals to own weapons for self-defense.

Third Amendment

Prohibits the forced quartering of soldiers in private homes during peacetime.

Fourth Amendment

Protects against unreasonable searches and seizures. It requires law enforcement to have a warrant based on probable cause.

Fifth Amendment

Guarantees the right to due process, protects against self-incrimination and double jeopardy. It means you cannot be tried for the same crime twice.

Sixth Amendment

Ensures the right to a fair and speedy trial, the right to know the charges against you, the right to confront witnesses, and the right to an attorney.

Seventh Amendment

Provides the right to a jury trial in civil cases involving more than a certain amount of money.

Eighth Amendment

Prohibits excessive bail, excessive fines, and cruel and unusual punishment.

Ninth Amendment

States that the enumeration of certain rights in the Constitution does not mean that people do not have other rights not listed.

Tenth Amendment

Affirms that powers not granted to the federal government are reserved for the states or the people.

Eleventh Amendment

Limits lawsuits against states in federal courts without the state's consent.

Twelfth Amendment

Revises the procedure for electing the Vice President and President. It ensures they are elected together.

Thirteenth Amendment

Abolishes slavery and involuntary servitude, except as punishment for a crime.

Fourteenth Amendment

Grants citizenship to all persons born or naturalized in the United States and provides equal protection under the law.

Fifteenth Amendment

Prohibits discrimination in voting rights based on race, color, or previous condition of servitude.

Sixteenth Amendment

Allows Congress to levy an income tax without apportioning it among the states based on population.

Seventeenth Amendment

Establishes the direct election of U.S. Senators by the voters of each state.

Eighteenth Amendment

Prohibits the manufacture, sale, and transportation of alcohol (later repealed by the Twenty-First Amendment).

Nineteenth Amendment

Grants women the right to vote.

Twentieth Amendment

Changes the dates for the start of presidential and congressional terms.

Twenty-First Amendment

Repeals the Eighteenth Amendment, allowing the legal sale of alcohol.

Twenty-Second Amendment

Limits the President to two terms in office.

Twenty-Third Amendment

Grants residents of Washington D.C. the right to vote for their own electors in presidential elections.

Twenty-Fourth Amendment

Prohibits the use of poll taxes in federal elections.

Twenty-Fifth Amendment

Establishes the procedures for presidential succession and disability.

Twenty-Sixth Amendment

Lowers the voting age to 18 years.

Twenty-Seventh Amendment

Delays laws affecting Congressional salary from taking effect until after the next election.
