ECOSYSTEM
Abiotic (nonliving) and biotic (living) factors living in the same environment

BIOTIC
Living (or once living) things of an ecosystem

WETLAND
Land that is covered with a shallow layer of water for all or part of the year

ESTUARY
A partially enclosed body of water where fresh water from rivers and streams meet ocean saltwater.

WATERSHED
The land that water flows across, under, or through on its way to a river

DIVIDE
The top of a mountain or high hills that separate where water flows

HEADWATERS
Small streams that flow down a mountain and collect together to begin a river

TRIBUTARY
Small streams, rivers, or creeks that flow into a big river

MAINSTEM
A big or large river (main part of river that is calm)

FLOODPLAINS
The land on each side of a river that holds water when it floods (water gets too high)

MOUTH
The part of the river that opens into a larger body of water

DEPOSITION
a process by which rivers carry sand, small pebbles, and rocks down stream and then deposit (drop) them.

SEDIMENT
small, solid pieces of material that come from rocks or living things

UPSTREAM
the direction moving against the flow of a water source (from mouth to source)

DOWNSTREAM
the direction moving with the flow of a water source (from source to mouth)
