2
New cards

Explain two reasons why Catholics see the Magisterium as the teaching office of the Church (4) - 2

P - Jesus gave authority to St Peter, and due to apostolic succession, the same authority has been passed down to each new Pope

E - this means that the magisterium has the authority to teach and interpret the Bible

3
New cards

Explain two reasons why Catholics view Mary as a model of charity (5) - 1

P - she went to help her cousin during pregnancy

E - Mary remained for ‘about three months’ (Luke)

4
New cards

Explain two reasons why Catholics view Mary as a model of charity (5) - 2

5
New cards

“The Bible is the literal Word of God.”

Evaluate this statement considering arguments for and against. (12)

P - Some Christians believe the Bible is the literal Word of God and should be followed exactly.
E - “All Scripture is God-breathed” (2 Timothy 3:16)

P - it was written by humans inspired by God.
E - The Catechism teaches the Bible was inspired by the Holy Spirit.

E - the against argument is stronger it explains the Bible can still be true without being completely literal.

P - The Bible is not the literal Word of God because it is a human record of God’s actions.
E - It includes stories from creation to Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection.

P - they believe all its teachings are completely true.
E - This includes believing creation in Genesis is a factual account.

E - the against argument is better bc most Christians believe the Bible needs interpretation..

6
New cards

10
New cards

“The magisterium is the best source of religious teaching.”

Evaluate this statement considering arguments for and against (12)

P - The magisterium interprets the Bible and Apostolic Tradition for Catholics, guiding them on what to believe

E - “I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew)

P - Catholics also have conscience to guide them.

E - “Deep within his conscience man discovers a law which he has not laid upon himself” (Gaudium et spes)

E - the for is a stronger argument because our conscience can be influenced by personal feelings or emotions, whereas the magisterium has a clear and consistent guidance for Catholics

P - The Bible is a better form of teaching for Catholics

E - “All Scripture is God-breathed” (2 Timothy)

P - magisterium can deal with modern issues

E - “you shall not boil a young goat in its mothers milk” (exodus)

E - the for is the stronger argument because although the Bible is sacred, it still needs interpretation for modern life

C - I believe that the magisterium is the best source of teaching because it has authority from Jesus. Although scripture is the Word of God, it still needs to be interpreted in a modern context so people know how to apply it to day to day life

11
New cards

15
New cards

“The teachings of Jesus are all a person needs to make ethical decisions.”

Evaluate this statement considering arguments for and against. (12)

P - they provide clear and easily available guidance for Catholics

E - Jesus teaches us to “Love your neighbour as yourself” (Mark).

P - However, some Christians argue that the teachings of Jesus alone are not enough.

E - Jesus does not directly address many modern issues such as euthanasia, genetic engineering, or social media ethics.

E - the argument against is stronger here because modern moral issues require more detailed interpretation than the Gospels provide.

P - Another argument for the statement is that Jesus’ teachings are the highest moral authority for Christians.

E - Jesus says, “I am the way and the truth and the life” (John 14:6).

P - However, others argue that Christians also need conscience and Church teaching to make ethical decisions.

E - The Catechism teaches that “Man has the right to act in conscience and in freedom” (CCC 1782), meaning individuals must also use personal moral judgement.

E - the argument against is stronger because Jesus’ teachings are foundational but not always specific enough for every ethical situation

P - it makes sure the teaching of the Church is updated.

E - “The task of interpreting the Word of God authentically has been entrusted solely to the magisterium of the Church.” (catechism)

E - This means  it updates teaching without changing the teaching of the apostles.

19
New cards

Explain two reasons why the magisterium is important to Catholics. (5) - 2

P - it is guided by the Holy Spirit.

E - “This teaching office is not above the word of God, but serves it.” (dei verbum)

E - This means its teachings must be holy and right.

20

P - using conscience can take into account modern problems.

E - They can make decisions based on the well-being of others and loving their neighbour.

23
New cards

Explain two ways the Bible can be interpreted. (5)

P - Catholics believe the Bible is inspired by the Holy Spirit.

Evaluate this statement considering arguments for and against. (12)

P - Mary shows perfect faith by accepting God’s will at the Annunciation

E - “here am, i, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word” (luke)

P - Catholics  see Mary not just as an example, but as someone who they can pray to and actively help believers

E - “All generations will call me blessed” (Luke)

E - overall, Mary's role as intercessor is a stronger argument because it shows she has an active role and is not just an example from the past

P - she shows strong belief in Jesus as the Son of God

E - Mary tells the servants “do whatever he tells you” (john) thus leading to Jesus performing his first miracle of turning water into wine.

P - Mary is also a model for how to live a pure life

E - overall, mary’s purity is a stronger argument because it shows that her role goes beyond faith alone and serves as model on how to be pure

25
New cards

Outline three functions of the Magisterium. (3)

  1. Interpret the Bible and the Apostolic Tradition for Catholics today

  2. The Magisterium issues dogmas

New cards

Explain two reasons why the four marks of the Church are important. (4)

P - the Church is Holy.
E - It is a source of sacraments and is therefore empowered by God to bring His grace to humanity.

P - the Church is universal.
E - Catholic means universal so the Christian message can be understood and believed by anyone in the world.

27
New cards

Explain two reasons why Catholics believe Jesus is an authoritative source of

moral teaching. (5)

P - he was the perfect human being.
E - “For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew)

.

P - he came to fulfil God’s law.
E - “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.” (Matthew)
E - This shows Jesus helped people understand what God wanted them to believe and do.

28
New cards

“The Second Vatican Council brought great change to the Church.”

Evaluate this statement considering arguments for and against.

P - it modernised worship and made it easier to understand.
E - “The use of the mother tongue may frequently be of great advantage to the people” (Sacrosanctum Concilium)

P - core beliefs stayed the same.
E - “The Church of Christ… continues to exist fully in the Catholic Church” (Lumen Gentium)

E - overall, key beliefs staying the same is stronger because it shows that only practices changed, not the Church’s core beliefs.

P - it improved relations with other religions.
E - “The Church rejects nothing that is true and holy in these religions” (Nostra Aetate)

P - Church authority stayed the same.
E - “The task of interpreting the word of God has been entrusted to the Magisterium alone” (Dei Verbum)

E - overall, the improvement of relations with other religions is stronger because it shows clear changes in worship and attitudes.

C - in conclusion, I believe the Second Vatican Council did bring great change because it modernised worship, and brought peace and harmony with others, even though core beliefs stayed the same

29
New cards

Outline three changes that happened because of the Second Vatican Council. (3)

  1. it confirmed that the Bible is inspired by the Holy Spirit

  2. the role of the laity becomes more important

  3. the Eucharist could be received in both forms

31
New cards

Explain two reasons why the Church as the Body of Christ is important for

Catholics. (5) - 1

P - we are the working body of Christ and can continue the work of Jesus today
E - "Go into all the world and preach the gospel” (mark)

E - this shows that Jesus wants us to complete his mission of spreading the Word of God and therefore, this is important because we are following his command

32
New cards

Explain two reasons why the Church as the Body of Christ is important for

Catholics. (5) - 2

P - it shows that everyone in the Church has a role.

E - “We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us” (Romans)

E - each person is special and has different gifts that can be used for the good of the Church

New cards

“The Church is apostolic.”

Evaluate this statement considering arguments for and against.

P - the authority given by Jesus to Peter has been passed down to the Pope

E - “You are Peter, and on this rock I will build my Church” (Matthew)

P - some Christians believe that everyone can follow God without Church hierarchy

E - for example, some denominations teach the priesthood of all believers

E - overall, Peter’s authority is a stronger argument because it is based on Peter passing  authority from Jesus  to generations of Church leaders, meaning that they have authority from God himself.

P - it is a fundamental teaching of the Catholic Church that it is apostolic

E - the nicene creed, which is recited during mass, states “one Holy catholic apostolic church”

P - the Bible alone should be the main source of authority, not Church leaders

E - “All Scripture is God-breathed” (2 Timothy)

E - overall, the nicene creed talking about the church’s apostolicy is the stronger argument because the it shows that the Church officially believes it is apostolic

34
New cards

relationship with Creation

P - respect the dignity of every living thing

E - This is because God created everything

P - must be stewards of the world as God intended

E - God created a good world therefore we should look after its goodness

35
New cards

Explain two beliefs about the Trinity found in the Nicene Creed. In your answer you must refer to a source of wisdom and authority

P - God the Son is Jesus Christ

E - ‘only begotten Son of God’

E -  Jesus shares the same nature as the Father

P -  Holy Spirit is equal in majesty to the Father and Son

E - ‘adored and glorified’

E - worship belongs only to God. this quote shows that the Holy Spirit is worshiped. therefore, the Holy Spirit is God.

36
New cards

“Living a good life is essential to receive salvation.” Evaluate this statement considering arguments for and against

P - (for) Living a good life is essential because sin separates people from God.

E - "The unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God" (1 Corinthians 6:9).

P - (against) Salvation comes through God's grace, not just good actions.

E - "Today you will be with me in paradise" (Luke 23:43).

E - Overall, the argument for is stronger because Catholics believe actions matter and people are judged by how they live.

P - (for) Jesus taught that people are judged by their actions.

E - "Whatever you did for the least of these, you did for me." (matthew)

P - (against) Nobody can live a perfect life because humans have free will.

E - Catholics believe God is loving and merciful.

E - Overall, the argument for is stronger because Catholic teaching links faith with good works.

37
New cards

Explain two reasons why belief in God the Father is important to Catholics

P - creator of heaven and earth

E - provides assurance because it reveals God’s omnipotence

P - demonstrates father-and-child-like relationship

E - God is there to nurture us through life

38
New cards

Explain two Catholic beliefs about life after death

P - a person who has unforgiven sins will go to Purgatory to be cleansed

E - Only perfectly pure go to heaven

E - reminds people to go to reconciliation

P - death is not the end

E - ‘I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies’ (john)

E - through his death and resurrection, Jesus made life after death in heaven possible

39
New cards

“The Paschal Mystery should be the main focus in a Catholic’s life.” Evaluate this statement considering arguments for and against

P - The Paschal Mystery should be the main focus because it gives Catholics hope of salvation.

E - "I am the resurrection and the life" (John 11:25).

P - The Paschal Mystery reminds Catholics to follow Jesus through suffering and faith.

E - "Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross" (Matthew 16:24).

E - Overall, the argument for the statement is stronger because the Paschal Mystery is the basis of salvation.

P - However, Catholics should focus on all of God's teachings.

E - "All Scripture is God-breathed" (2 Timothy 3:16).

P - Jesus taught that actions are important.

E - "Whatever you did for one of the least of these, you did for me" (Matthew 25:40).

E - Overall, the argument for the statement is stronger because Jesus' death and resurrection make salvation possible.

C - In conclusion, I believe the Paschal Mystery should be the main focus in a Catholic's life because it is the foundation of salvation, although Catholics should still follow all of Jesus' teachings.

40
New cards

Outline three events of the death and resurrection of Jesus

  1. Jesus was nailed to the cross

  2. Simon of Cyrene carried the cross

  3. God appeared to Mary but she did not recognise him

41
New cards

Explain two reasons why belief in the Trinity is important to Catholics.

p - Belief in the Holy Spirit helps Catholics

to understand the presence of God in

the world

e - and the strength that it

brings to Christians

p - Belief in God the Father helps Catholics

understand the power and creativity of

God

e - and his care for the world and

its people

42
New cards

Explain two reasons why belief in Jesus as fully human and fully God is important

to Catholics.

p - Jesus being fully divine means God

became known to humans

e - ‘Jesus is true God and true

man’ (Catechism)

e - if Jesus

was not conceived of the Holy Spirit,

he would not be God incarnate (1); but

just a man

p - Only through being fully human and

fully God could Jesus bring salvation

from sin

e - ‘Yet to all who did receive him, to those who

believed in his name, he gave the right

to become children of God’ (John 1:12)

e - if Christians try to live by

his example they know that they are

living as God wants them to

43

The Creation account is literally true

The Creation account is literally true.” Evaluate this statement.

P Literalist Christians believe the Creation account is literally true because the Bible is the Word of God.

E: “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1).

P (Against): Catholics do not see Genesis as a scientific account.

E: Augustine said, “What kind of days these were it is extremely difficult… to conceive.”

E: Overall, the argument against is stronger because it fits Catholic teaching and modern science.

P (For): Literalists reject evolution and believe God created everything in six days.

E: “And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good” (Genesis 1:31).

P (Against): Liberal Christians believe Genesis teaches spiritual truths.

E: “For dust you are and to dust you shall return” (Genesis 3:19).

E: Overall, the argument against is stronger because many Christians interpret Genesis symbolically.

C: In conclusion, I do not believe the Creation account is literally true. It teaches important religious truths about God as Creator, but it should not be read as a scientific explanation of creation.

44
New cards

outline threee beliefs another holy spirit

The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity

(1)

• The Holy Spirit gives guidance (1)

• The Holy Spirit is a way God communicates

with people

45
New cards

why is the ascension important

p - confirmed the final payment for

sin had been made

e - as Jesus is now seated

at the right hand of the Father (1)

p - It allows Catholics to know the intercessory

work of Jesus had begun

e - assuring Catholics

they will always have access to the Father

forever

46
New cards

two ways the Bible shows the trinity of persons

p - The Baptism of Jesus shows that God is the

Trinity

e - ‘This is

my Son, whom I love; with him I am well

pleased’ (Matthew)

e - as the Father speaks, the Son is

baptised, the Spirit descends in the form of

a dove

p - The Bible shows clearly that Jesus referred

to God as his Father

e - He said to them, “When you pray, say:

“‘Father, hallowed be your name” (Luke)

e - the Bible shows that

Christians should pray to God as Father

47
New cards

“Only the pure will go directly to heaven.” Evaluate this statement.

P (For): Catholics believe only the pure can go directly to heaven.

E: The Catechism says those who die in “God’s grace and friendship” go to heaven (CCC 1023).

P (Against): Some Christians do not believe in purgatory.

E: They believe God sends good people straight to heaven at judgement.

E: Overall, the argument for is stronger because it follows Catholic teaching on purgatory and purification.

P (For): The sacrament of reconciliation removes sin and makes a person pure.

E: Catholics believe confession restores a person to God’s grace.

P (Against): Jesus promised heaven to the criminal on the cross.

E: “Today you will be with me in paradise” (Luke 23:43).

E: Overall, the argument against is stronger because Jesus’ teaching suggests God’s mercy allows direct entry to heaven.

C: In conclusion, I believe that not only the pure go directly to heaven. Although Catholics teach purification through purgatory, Jesus’ words to the criminal show that faith, repentance and God’s mercy can allow direct entry to heaven.

48
New cards

why is imago dei important

p - Being created in God’s image means that

humans occupy a distinctive place in creation

e - ‘Rule over the fish in

the sea and the birds in the sky and over every

living creature that moves on the ground’

(Genesis)

e - humans are the only creatures that are able

to know and love God

p - It shows humans have self-knowledge and

conscience

e - ‘God thus enables men to be intelligent and

free causes in order to complete the work of

creation’ (Catechism)

e - meaning that God has given the

freedom to choose between good and evil (1)

49
New cards

“The resurrection of Jesus is the most significant event in Christianity.” Evaluate this statement.

P (For): Catholics believe the resurrection is the most important event because Jesus is still present with believers today.

E: “I am always with you” (Matthew 28:20).

P (Against): Some Catholics believe the crucifixion is more significant.

E: Jesus’ death brought salvation and restored humanity’s relationship with God.

E: Overall, the argument for is stronger because the resurrection proves that Jesus defeated death.

P (For): The resurrection is the foundation of Christian faith and belief in eternal life.

E: St Paul taught that Christians can look forward to resurrection and an afterlife.

P (Against): Some Christians believe Christmas is more significant.

E: Without Jesus’ birth there would have been no Christianity.

E: Overall, the argument for is stronger because the resurrection proves Jesus’ divine power and gives meaning to Christian belief.

C: In conclusion, I believe the resurrection of Jesus is the most significant event in Christianity. It is the foundation of Christian faith, proves Jesus’ power over death, and gives Christians hope of eternal life.

50
New cards

three beliefs about resurrection of Jesus

Jesus’ female followers visited the tomb on

Sunday morning (1)

• The women found that the stone covering

the tomb entrance had been moved (1)

• The tomb was empty (1)

51
New cards

why is salvation important

p - Salvation is important because it was

the reason why God became man (1)

e - his death opened the gates of heaven

so that Christians can spend eternal life

there

e - “ salvation is to be found

through him alone; in all the world

there is no one else whom God has

given who can save us’ (Acts 4:12) (1)

p - A person needs to be saved from their

sin so that they can have a good

relationship with God (1)

e - and so that

when they die they don’t go to hell or

purgatory (1)

e - ‘Those who do what is

true come to the light in order that the

light may show that what they did was

in obedience to God.’ (John 3:10-21) (1)

52
New cards

“The best way to understand Jesus is as both fully God and fully human.” Evaluate this statement.

P (For): Catholics believe Jesus is both fully God and fully human.

E: “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us” (John 1:14).

P (Against): Some Catholics believe it is best to understand Jesus as fully human.

E: Jesus experienced suffering, pain and temptation like other humans.

E: Overall, the argument for is stronger because it includes both Jesus’ humanity and divinity.

P (For): Understanding Jesus as fully God and fully human explains how he can help people.

E: Jesus understands human suffering but also has divine power.

P (Against): Some Catholics believe the best way to understand Jesus is as the Saviour or Messiah.

E: Jesus came to forgive sins and fulfil Old Testament prophecies.

E: Overall, the argument for is stronger because Jesus can only be the Saviour if he is both human and divine.

C: In conclusion, I believe the best way to understand Jesus is as both fully God and fully human. This reflects Catholic teaching and helps Christians understand his power, compassion and role as the Saviour of the world.

53
New cards

Explain two reasons why the resurrection of Jesus is important

P - proves that Jesus was the Son of God

E - "You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has risen!” (book of mark)

E - This shows that Jesus rose from the dead, and since only God has the power to raise the dead, this means that Jesus is God

P - The resurrection allows salvation from sin

E - “salvation is found in no one else” (book of Acts)

E -  this that God accepted Jesus’ sacrifice on humanity’s behalf because of his full obedience, meaning that through his resurrection, Jesus has atoned for our sins

54
New cards

“Catholics must care for the world.” Evaluate this statement considering arguments for and against

P -  we are stewards of God’s creation

E - “till it and keep it.” (Genesis)

P - humans were given dominion over the Earth

E - “and have dominion over” (Genesis)

E - Overall, Catholics being stewards is a stronger argument because some may argue that dominion is understood through stewardship and that this power should not be abused.

P - Caring for God’s creation shows care for one another and ultimately demonstrate our love for Him

E - In the book of Mark, we have been commanded to:“love God…and love your neighbour as yourself” (mark)

P - Catholics must not be forced to care for the environment and should focus more on helping others directly (e.g. giving to charity)

E - “you may freely eat” (genesis)

E - overall, caring for God’s creation shows care for one another is a stronger argument because it demonstrates that looking after the environment is connected to caring for each other as environmental damage often affects those most vulnerable.

C - In conclusion, some may disagree with this statement because caring for others directly is more important and humans have dominion so we must prioritise ourselves. However others might agree because we have stewardship and caring for God’s creation shows care for others. In my opinion, I believe that Catholics should care for the world because not only does it make it easier for those vulnerable but it reflects our love for God and fulfills our duty.
