Crusades

A series of holy wars from 1096-1270 AD between Christians and Muslims over control of the Holy Land

Excommunicate

cast out from the church

Friar

people who belonged to religious orders but lived and worked among the people

Heresey

Religious ideas that oppose accepted church teachings

Holy Land

Jerusalem and parts of the surrounding area where Jesus lived, preached, and taught

Hundred Years War

a series of battles fought between France and England from 1337 to 1453 that changed governments and how armies fought.

Magna Carta

a document that listed the rights that the king could not ignore. King John was forced to sign this in 1215

Parliament

the lawmaking body of British government (like our congress)

Spanish Inquisition

An organization of priests in Spain that looked for and punished anyone suspected of secretly practicing their old religion instead of Roman Catholicism.
