Cation
A positively charged ion (pronounced cat-ion) that results from the loss of electrons.
Potassium (K) atom
An uncharged atom characterized by having an equal number of protons and electrons (19).
Potassium cation (K+)
An ion that has lost one electron, resulting in a composition of 19 protons and 18 electrons.
Superscript
The notation used to indicate the charge of an ion, such as the +1 in K+.
Loss of electrons
The specific process that gives an atom an overall positive charge.
Overall charge calculation
The sum of protons and electrons, such as 19protons−18electrons=+1 charge for a potassium cation.
Potassium Nucleus
The central part of the potassium atom or ion which contains 19protons and 20neutrons.
