Subject-Verb Agreement
The grammatical rule stating that a singular subject takes a singular verb and a plural subject takes a plural verb.
Collective Noun
A noun that refers to a group of individuals, which can take either a singular or plural verb depending on the context.
Fractions
When referring to fractions, the verb agrees with the whole, not the fraction itself.
Money
Use a singular verb if the amount of money is seen as a single unit; use a plural verb if counted as individual units.
Interjection
A part of speech that expresses strong emotion and is often set apart from a sentence, such as 'Wow!' or 'Oh no!'
Transitive Verb
A verb that requires one or more objects to complete its meaning, such as 'I admire your courage.'
Intransitive Verb
A verb that does not require an object, e.g., 'The baby was crying.'
Pronoun
A word that replaces a noun, such as 'he', 'she', 'it'.
Adverb of Manner
Describes how an action is performed, such as 'ran quickly'.
Adverb of Time
Indicates when something occurs, such as 'She called us yesterday.'
Adverb of Place
Describes where an action takes place, for example, 'I looked everywhere!'
Adverb of Degree
Specifies the intensity or degree of an action or quality, like 'very talented'.
Conjunction
A part of speech that connects words, phrases, or clauses, for example, 'and' or 'but'.
Noun
A part of speech that represents a person, place, thing, or idea.
Concrete Noun
A noun that can be perceived through the senses, e.g., 'table', 'apple'.
Abstract Noun
A noun that represents an idea or a quality that cannot be perceived through the senses, e.g., 'happiness', 'bravery'.
