Geopolitics
The analysis of how geography impacts political decision-making and territorial disputes on a global scale.
State
The largest political unit in terms of international relations- a politically organized territory.
Nation
A group of people who have certain things (such as heritage, a traditional homeland, and shared beliefs and values).
Nation-State
A singular nation of people who fulfill the qualifications of a state- strong cultural unity. Ex. Japan and Iceland, due to their relative isolation and homogeneity.
Political Geography
Study of the relationship between people, political units, and territory at various scales.
Stateless Nation
A people group with a special desire to establish their own state (ex. Kurds)
Multistate nation
When a nation has a state of its own but stretches across borders of other states (ex. Hungarians living in Romania).
Multinational state
One country that contains more than one nation/ cultures
Devolution
Transfer of power from a national government to state or local governments. (Like Scotland and Wales)
