Cerebrum
Major brain region consisting of two hemispheres and five lobes per hemisphere.
Gyri
Ridges on the surface of the brain.
Sulci
Depressions or grooves on the surface of the brain.
Fissures
Deep sulci that separate lobes of the brain.
Anterior
Directional term also known as rostral.
Posterior
Directional term also known as caudal.
Neurulation
Process involving the formation of the neural plate and groove.
Cranial neuropore
Opening at the cranial end of the neural tube.
Caudal neuropore
Opening at the caudal end of the neural tube.
Neural tube defects
Abnormalities like anencephaly and spina bifida resulting from improper neural tube closure.
Primary Vesicles
The three initial brain vesicles: Prosencephalon, Mesencephalon, Rhombencephalon.
Secondary Vesicles
The derivatives of primary vesicles, such as Telencephalon and Diencephalon.
Vitamin B12 and folate
Nutrients important for the prevention of neural tube defects.
Cranial Meninges
Three protective membranes: pia mater, arachnoid mater, dura mater.
Subarachnoid space
Space containing cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) that circulates around the brain.
Hematomas
Blood clots that can form within the cranial cavity.
Meningitis
Inflammation of the meninges, potentially serious infection.
Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF)
Fluid that circulates in the subarachnoid space, protects the brain.
Choroid plexus
Structure responsible for the formation of cerebrospinal fluid.
Blood-Brain Barrier (BBB)
Selective permeability mechanism that protects the central nervous system.
Frontal Lobe
Part of the cerebrum involved in motor control, planning, and personality.
Parietal Lobe
Part of the cerebrum primarily responsible for sensory processing.
Temporal Lobe
Part of the cerebrum that processes hearing and smell.
Occipital Lobe
Part of the cerebrum that is primarily responsible for vision.
Insula
Region of the brain involved in taste and memory.
Primary motor cortex
Area responsible for executing voluntary motor functions.
Broca's area
Region involved in speech production.
Somatosensory cortex
Area that processes sensory information from the body.
Visual cortex
Region that processes visual information.
Prefrontal cortex
Part of the brain involved in decision-making.
Midbrain
Component of the brainstem involved in reflexes and dopamine production.
Pons
Part of the brainstem that controls respiratory functions.
Medulla Oblongata
Component that regulates cardiovascular and respiratory functions.
Cerebellum
Part of the brain responsible for coordination, balance, and motor learning.
Limbic System
Set of structures involved in emotional processing and memory formation.
Reticular Activating System
Network that maintains alertness and consciousness.
Hippocampus
Region associated with the formation of memories.
Amygdala
Structure involved in emotional responses, especially fear.
Wernicke's area
Region of the brain responsible for language comprehension.
Clinical implications of cranial nerves
Consequences of damage or dysfunction of nerve functions.
