what are the 3 gland pairs?
parotid gland
located on surface of masseter muscle behind ramus of mandible; composed of grape like clusters of cells; secrete into tubes leading into oral cavity; thin, watery serous secretion; largest of all the glands; produces 25% of total resting salivary volume
parotid gland
duct opens into the oral cavity opposite the max 2nd molars; aka stenson’s duct; mumps is the viral infection of the gland; causes pain during secretion
submandibular gland
below body of mandible and wraps around the mylohyoid muscle in the neck; produces 60-65% of resting saliva; mixed gland - serous and mucous cells; duct opens in sublingual caruncle at the base of the lingual frenum in floor of mouth
sublingual gland
anterior flood of mouth, next to mandibular canines; smalles of the 3 pair of glands; produces 10% of saliva; mostly mucous cells with some serous cells; more viscous
