The menstrual (mc) & Ovarian cycles (oc) happen in females every 28 days

Days 1-6, the menstrual phase of the mc begins. Low levels of hormones cause the spinal artery to contract, causing no flow of nutrients or oxygen to the endometrial lining of the uterus. The endometrium dies and is sloughed off.

3. This causes the follicular phase of the oc to start, which develops the follicles holding the oocyte from immature, primary, secondary, and finally tertiary. The follicles secrete estrogen, and fsh from the anterior pituitary helps develop the follicles. Estrogen then rebuilds and thickens the endometrial lining in the proliferative phase of the mc.

The increase in estrogen causes GnRH (secreted by the hypothalamus) to stimulate LH (from the anterior pituitary) to secrete rapidly (in a surge), which begins the ovulation phase of the oc. The secondary oocyte (so) bursts out of the tertiary follicle and travels along the uterine (fillopian) tube.

If fertilized while traveling between the infundibulum and the ampulla. This causes the secretion phase of the mc which converts the burst follicle into the corpus luteum. This secretes progesterone and helps rebuild the endometrial lining as well. Rebuilding the lining will prepare the uterus for implantation if the so is fertilized

6.Corpes

If the so is not fertilized, the luteal phase of the oc begins. This converts the corpus luteum to the corpus albicans. this lowers all hormone levels, intiating the cycle to restart

7. Identical twins differentiating themselves

These cycles work together in negative and positive feedback loops to maintain homeostasis. The ovarian cycle is in the ovary and prepares the egg for fertilization. The menstrual cycle is in the uterus and prepares the body for fetal growth.
