Imago Dei
Latin for “Image of God”.
Soul
The unifying and animating principle of the body.
Feast of the Epiphany
The Celebration of the Incarnation of Jesus which reminds us of God’s love for us and God’s call to salvation for all people, including non-Jewish people.
Advent
A time in which we are called to reflect on the mission of Christ, imitate Christ in our lives, grow, and have hope for the future.
Easter
The Celebration of Christ’s Resurrection and a time of rejoicing over Jesus’ victory of sin and death.
Ordinary Time
A solemn time for reflection and repentance meant to align our lives more closely with Christ through increased prayer, fasting, and almsgiving.
Theological virtue
A virtue that represents trust and belief in God and His Word.
Charity
A virtue defined as the love of God and obedience to His Will.
Invalid
A Catholic term for when a Sacrament is celebrated incorrectly, resulting in nothing happening.
Valid but illicit
A Catholic term for when a Sacrament is celebrated and something happened, but it was performed unlawfully in the eyes of the Church.
Sin
Any deliberate offense, in thought, word, or deed, against the will of God.
Mortal Sin
An action so contrary to the will of God that it results in a complete separation from God and his grace; also defined as a change of heart, turning away from sin and toward God.
Criteria for Mortal Sin
Three requirements that must be met: Full Knowledge, Full Consent, and Grave Matter.
Sacraments of Initiation
Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist.
Sacraments of Healing
Anointing of the Sick and Confession.
Sacraments of Vocation
Matrimony and Holy Orders.
Indelible Mark
A visible sign that makes known what is taking place invisibly.
Santification
The process of being made holy through sanctifying grace.
Magisterium
The official teaching authority of the Church made up of the bishops in union with the pope.
Common priesthood
The priesthood shared by all who are baptized, allowing them to participate in the mission of Christ.
Effects of Baptism
Removes Original Sin and makes available the other sacraments.
Transubstantiation
The changing of the substance of an item but not the accidents.
Anamnesis
To live out and participate in memoriam.
Accident
A non-essential form that is experienced by the senses.
Substance
That which sustains beneath the accidents and is essential to the nature of a thing.
Source and Summit
A description of the Eucharist by the catechism as the origin and highest point of the faith.
Catechumen
An unbaptized person in the process of receiving catechesis and their sacraments.
Form (Metaphysical)
The spiritual and metaphysical component of a thing.
Matter (Metaphysical)
The physical or material component of a thing.
Concupiscence
Our control over our tendency to sin.
Perfect contrition
Sincere repentance because of fear of God.
Imperfect contrition
Repentance because you fear death and judgment.
Grace
The free and undeserved gift of God that gives us the capacity to grow in holiness and do the will of God.
Actual Grace
The grace of God given to us which makes us holy.
Annulment
The process by which the Church finds the Sacrament of Marriage invalid.
Natural Family Planning
A method approved by the Church where couples take natural measures to regulate conception while remaining open to life.
Domestic Church
A name for the first and most fundamental community of faith: the family.
Contraception
Methods to prevent life from being born that the Church opposes because they violate the openness to life vowed during marriage.
Cohabitation
A sin occurring when a man and woman live together prior to marriage.
Persona Christi
Christ acting through the mediation of the Priest.
Laicization
When a priest has been removed from his faculties as a priest either formally or through punishment.
Heaven
Eternal closeness with God in the beatific vision.
Hell
Eternal separation from God.
Purgatory
A temporary form of purification in preparation for Heaven.
Sacrament of Baptism
The basis of the entire Christian Life. Form: “I Baptize you”; Matter: Water.
Sacrament of Confirmation
The outpouring of the gifts of the Holy Spirit onto us that completes the grace of baptism. Form: “Be sealed”; Matter: Laying on of hands and Oil.
Sacrament of Eucharist
Essential Christian liturgical celebration in which the Death and Resurrection of Jesus are both remembered and renewed. Form: Words of consecration; Matter: Bread and Wine.
Sacrament of Reconciliation
The liturgical celebration of God’s forgiveness of sin to which the sinner is reconciled with God and the Church. Form: Absolution; Matter: Sincere confession, act of contrition, and penance.
Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick
A sacrament in which the gravely ill is anointed and prayed over by the priest. Form: Words of anointing; Matter: Anointing Oils.
Sacrament of Holy Orders
The sacrament by which baptized men are ordained for permanent ministry in the Church. Form: Prayer of ordination; Matter: Laying on of hands + oil.
Sacrament of Marriage
A lifelong commitment and covenant between a baptized man and baptized woman. Form: Vows; Matter: Consummation.
