Chest pass
A short and straight pass.
Bounce pass
A pass that hits the floor before reaching the receiver.
Baseball pass
A pass used for long distances.
Overhead pass
A pass often used during a fast break.
Travelling
A violation involving taking too many steps without dribbling.
Double dribble
A violation that occurs when a player dribbles the ball again after stopping.
Goaltending
An illegal block of a shot.
Shot clock
A timer of 24seconds within which a team must attempt a shot.
Backcourt rule
A rule requiring the ball to be advanced past the half-court line within 8seconds.
3-second rule
A violation for staying in the key for too long.
Free throw
A shot worth 1point.
Inside shot
A basket worth 2points.
3-point shot
A long-distance shot worth 3points.
Dribbling
The act of bouncing the ball while moving, using the fingers and wrist.
Rebounding
The act of getting the ball after a missed shot, requiring timing and jumping.
Foul
Illegal physical contact with an opponent.
Charging
An offensive foul involving illegal contact.
Unsportsmanlike foul
An intentional foul.
Technical foul
A foul called for bad behavior.
Point Guard
The team leader and playmaker.
Shooting Guard
A position primarily responsible for scoring.
Center
Typically the tallest player on the team, responsible for rebounding and defense.
Man-to-Man
A defensive strategy where one player guards one specific opponent.
Ring height
The basket height, which is 10feet.
Court size
The dimensions of a basketball court, which are 28m×15m.
Jump ball
The method used to start the game.
5 fouls
The number of personal fouls a player can commit before being disqualified (out).
And-1
When a player makes a basket and is awarded 1free throw due to being fouled.
Lay-up
A shot taken while moving toward the basket.
Underhand catch
A catch made when the ball is below the waist.
