Communication Cycle
Starts with a message from the sender and ends within a response from the receiver.
Effective Communication
When both the sender and receiver assign similar meanings to the conveyed message.
Medical Assistant Responsibility
Interacting with patients and families, providing and receiving information, and ensuring patient understanding.
Feedback
Verbal or nonverbal evidence or verification of understanding of the message.
Noise
Anything which blocks the message between the source and destination; cannot always be avoided but can be controlled.
Physical Discomfort
A form of general noise that can interfere with the communication cycle.
Emotional Discomfort
A type of internal noise that can block the intended message between sender and receiver.
Maslow's Hierarchy of Human Needs
A developmental model where basic needs must be met before higher needs can be achieved.
Physiological Needs
Basic survival needs including air, water, food, shelter, sleep, clothing, and reproduction.
Safety and Security
Needs involving personal security, employment, resources, health, and property.
Love and Belonging
Needs involving friendship, intimacy, family, and a sense of connection.
Esteem
Needs involving respect, self-esteem, status, recognition, strength, and freedom.
Self-actualization
The desire to become the most that one can be and achieve inner potential.
