Data management
A discipline that focuses on proper generation, storage, and retrieval of data.
Schema
The conceptual organization of the entire database as viewed by the database administrator.
Metadata
Data about data through which the end-user data are integrated and managed.
Business rule
A brief, precise, and unambiguous description of a policy, procedure, or principle within a specific organization.
Subschema
Defines the portion of the database “seen” by the application programs that produce information from the data.
Information
The result of processing raw data to reveal its meaning.
Segment
In a hierarchical model, the equivalent of a record in a file system.
Data model
A relatively simple representation of more complex real-world data structures.
Context
Required by information to reveal meaning.
Raw data
Data that must be properly formatted for storage, processing, and presentation.
