What was Malenkov's New Course?
Malenkov embarked upon a New Course in which the output of consumer goods was to expand even faster than that of heavy industry. He also announced that agricultural taxes would be halved, the prices paid for produce were to be raised and the size of private plots was to be increased – all measures popular with peasants.
What was Khrushchev's background in agriculture?
He had a particular interest in agriculture which became more pronounced when he came to power and, completely the opposite of Stalin, he liked to get mud on his boots and visit collective farms.
