Dendrites
The part of a neuron that conducts nerve impulses toward the cell body.
Interneurons
Neurons that carry nerve impulses between sensory neurons and motor neurons.
Bipolar neuron
Neurons with one dendrite and one axon.
Node of Ranvier
Unmyelinated gaps between segments of the myelin sheath.
Oligodendrocytes
Neuroglial cells that produce a myelin sheath around axons of neurons in the central nervous system.
Effector
The muscle or gland that responds to a motor impulse in the reflex arc.
Synapse
The functional contact between two neurons or between a neuron and an effector.
Reticular formation circuit
The circuit that likely plays a role in breathing, waking up, sleeping, and short-term memory.
