Monteverdi’s madrigal Cruda Amarilli (1605) was heavily criticized by Giovanni Artusi for its use of dissonance
According to Monteverdi, the style or “rules” of the first practice no longer apply
If the text dictates breaking the “rules”, it is acceptable to do so (also references De Rore’s use of dissonance)
