Topographic Model (Freud)
Theories of personality comprising the Conscious, Preconscious, and Unconscious minds.
Structural Model (Freud)
Theories of personality comprising the Id, Ego, and Superego.
The Id
A component of the structural model that is instinctual, unconscious, and operates according to the pleasure principle.
The Ego
A component of the structural model that operates on the reality principle and acts as an intermediary between the id and superego.
Projection
A defense mechanism where one attributes their own unacknowledged feelings or impulses to others.
Neologism
The creation of brand new words by a patient that have a private meaning only understood by them.
Illusion
A misinterpretation of a real external sensory stimulus.
Hallucination
A false sensory perception experienced in the absence of an external stimulus.
Delusion
A fixed false belief that is held despite evidence to the contrary and is not shared by others in the patient's culture.
Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE)
A standardized questionnaire used to screen for cognitive impairment, with a total score of 30 and a common cut-off for cognitive impairment at 24.
Mild Intellectual Disability IQ Range
A classification of intellectual disability defined by an IQ score in the range of 52 to 68.
Moderate Intellectual Disability IQ Range
A classification of intellectual disability defined by an IQ score in the range of 36 to 51.
Severe Intellectual Disability IQ Range
A classification of intellectual disability defined by an IQ score in the range of 20 to 35.
Profound Intellectual Disability IQ Range
A classification of intellectual disability defined by an IQ score less than (<) 20.
Schneider's First Rank Symptoms
A group of symptoms used to diagnose Schizophrenia, including audible thoughts, voices arguing or commenting, and somatic passivity.
CAGE Questionnaire
A 4-question screening tool for alcohol use disorder: Cut down, Annoyed, Guilty, and Eye-opener.
Wernicke-Korsakoff Syndrome Triad
The clinical presentation of Thiamine deficiency characterized by confusion, ataxia, and ophthalmoplegia.
Pick's Disease
A type of frontotemporal dementia characterized by early changes in personality and social behavior.
Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT)
A treatment modality involving the induction of a generalized seizure for therapeutic purposes, often used for treatment-resistant depression.
McNaughten's Rule
A legal standard for insanity stating that at the time of the act, the accused did not know the nature and quality of the act or that it was wrong.
Lithium Therapeutic Range
The monitored blood level range for lithium, generally between 0.8 and 1.2mEq/L for acute mania.
Splitting
A defense mechanism common in Borderline Personality Disorder where individuals are viewed as all good or all bad.
Bulimia Nervosa
An eating disorder characterized by binge eating followed by compensatory behaviors like self-induced vomiting or laxative use.
Anorexia Nervosa
An eating disorder characterized by a restriction of energy intake leading to significantly low body weight and an intense fear of gaining weight.
