Phlebotomist
Individual whose duties and responsibilities are to collect blood and prepare it for testing.
Health Care Administrator
Individuals who plan, direct, coordinate, and supervise the delivery of health care in a health care facility.
Orthodontist
Deals with with prevention and correction of irregularities of the alignment of teeth.
Perfusionist
Individuals who operate heart-lung machines during open heart surgery; monitor blood gases and vital signs; and administer blood products, anesthetic agents, and/or drugs as needed.
Psychologist
Individuals who study human behavior and use this knowledge to help individuals deal with problems of everyday living.
Dietitian
Individuals who manage food service systems, assess patients’/residents’ nutritional needs, plan menus, and teach others proper nutrition and special diets.
Certified Nurse Midwife
Provide total care for normal pregnancies, examine the pregnant woman, teach childbirth classes, monitor the infant and mother during childbirth, and deliver the infant.

Medical Laboratory Technologist
Individuals who study the tissues, fluids, and cells of the human body to help determine the presence and/or cause of disease.
Clinic
Health care facilities composed of a group of medical or dental doctors and other personnel who share a facility.
Laboratories
Facilities that perform special diagnostic tests such as blood or urine tests to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases.

Facilities that provide care for the teeth and dental diseases.
Long term care
Facilities that provide assistance and care for elderly patients.
Home health care
Agencies that provide care in a patient’s home, including nursing care, personal care, therapy, and homemaking.
Emergency care services
Facilities providing special care for victims of accidents or sudden (acute) illness, such as ambulance services and rescue squads.
Hospice
Agencies providing care for people who are terminally ill and who usually have life expectancies of 6 months or less.
OSHA
Establish and enforce standards that protect workers from job-related injuries and illnesses.
AHRQ
Federal agency responsible for improving the quality, safety, efficiency, and effectiveness of health care for Americans.
ONC
National office responsible for building a private and secure nationwide health information exchange to improve health care.
WHO (World Health Organization)
International agency sponsored by the United Nations that compiles statistics on disease and addresses serious health problems throughout the world.
Physical Growth & Development
Refers to body growth, height and weight changes, muscle and nerve development, and changes in body organs.
Mental Growth & Development
Refers to intellectual development, including learning how to solve problems, make judgments, and deal with situations.
Emotional Growth & Development
Refers to feeling and matters such as dealing with love, hate, joy, fear, excitement, and other similar feelings.
Social Growth & Development
Refers to interactions and relationships with other people such as with family or friends.
Self-actualization
Achieving one’s full potential.
Esteem
To place a high value on or respect.
Denial
The first stage of grief, characterized by the thought, "No not me".
Anger
The second stage of grief, characterized by the thought, "Why me".
Bargaining
The third stage of grief, characterized by the thought, "Please god let me live for just one more week".
Depression
The fourth stage of grief, where a person may experience regrets or sadness.
Acceptance
The final stage of grief, characterized by the thought, "We all gotta go sometime".
Concrete operational stage
The Piaget stage from ages 7 to 11 during which the ability to think logically about real situations is developed.
Industry vs. Inferiority
The main conflict during Erikson’s school age years.
Slander
False information, usually spoken about a person that can affect their reputation.
Libel
False written statement that causes a person ridicule or contempt or causes damage to the person’s reputation.
HIPAA
A U.S. federal law enacted in 1996 to protect sensitive patient health information from being disclosed without consent.
Living will
Legal documents stating a person’s desires on what measures should or should not be taken to prolong life when his or her condition is terminal.
Patient self-determination act
A federal law mandating that every individual has the right to make decisions regarding medical care, including the right to refuse treatment.
Negligence
Failure to give care that is normally expected, resulting in injury to another person.
Invasion of privacy
Revealing personal information about an individual without his or her consent.
Defamation
A false statement that causes ridicule or damage to a reputation, such as slander or libel.
Assault and battery
Assault includes a threat or attempt to injure, and battery includes the unlawful touching of another person without consent.
Ethics
Principles of right or good conduct.
Patient’s rights
Factors of care that all patients can expect to receive.
Tort
A wrongful or illegal act of civil law not involving a contract.
Informed consent
Permission granted voluntarily by a person who is of sound mind and aware of all factors involved.
