what is mannitol salts agar?
-is a microbiological medium that is both selective and differential
why is mannitol salt agar selective?
-it has a high salt concentration and will only allow halophilic or halotolerant species to grow on it
how much salt does the agar have?
-contains 7.5% NaCl
-normal contains 0.5% NaCl
what is halophilic?
-salt loving species
what is halotolerant?
-salt tolerant species
why is mannitol salt agar differential?
-it will detect acid production because of fermentation of mannitol in species that can ferment mannitol to produce acid
what does the medium contain?
-a pH indicator, phenol red, that is red orange when the pH is neutral
what will happen to the agar is a species ferments mannitol and produces acid?
-the pH of the medium decreases and phenol red will becomes yellow
what does a positive result look like?
-medium is yellow after growth
what does a negative result look like?
-medium remains red orange after growth and growth observed
