Diabetes
A condition in which the body is unable to produce enough insulin, the hormone required for the metabolism of sugar
classifications of diabetes:
-type 1 diabetes
-type 2 diabetes
-latent autoimmune diabetes
-gestational
diabetes type 1
juvenile diabetes, insulin dependent diabetes where the body produces little or no insulin. must inject insulin into the body.
diabetes type 2
A chronic condition where the body does not use insulin properly and becomes insulin resistant
-can be reversed through lifestyle
Latent autoimmune diabetes in adults (LADA)
a condition in which type 1 diabetes develops in adults
clinical manifestations of diabetes
-hyperglycemia
-the 3 P's: polyuria, polydipsia, and polyphagia
-fatigue, weakness, vision changes, tingling, skin lesions/wounds
-type 1 may have sudden weight loss
diagnostic findings for diabetes:
fasting glucose ---> 126 or above
casual glucose---> 200 or above
for a diabetic patient, what is the everyday glucose goal?
under 150
(fasting 90-110)
A1C goal--> uner 6-7%
what are the 5 components of therapy/management for diabetic patients?
