Mulches
Labor-intensive materials, such as bark or leaf molds, used to cover soil, moderate temperatures, and smother weeds, though they can often contain weed seeds or creeping perennial parts.
Volcano mulch
The practice of piling mulch high against the trunk of a tree, which serves as a surefire way to cause the tree's health to decline.
Biocontrols
The use of one organism to control another, requiring a multi-pronged approach and specific knowledge of the pest's biology and the biocontrol's food preferences.
Lisma
A Long Island resource (lisma.org) providing information and management options for invasive plants, insects, and aquatic organisms.
Classical approach
A biocontrol method where an organism is released into the environment to build up its population and exert a long-term influence on a pest.
Inundative approach
A biocontrol method involving the release of a concentrated, high volume of organisms to overwhelm a pest, commonly used in controlled growing spaces like greenhouses.
Beneficial nematodes
Biocontrol organisms that can be applied using sprayable formulations with standard equipment to infect and kill target insects.
Conservation of natural enemies
A management practice of providing food sources and habitats in the landscape to allow beneficial organisms like lacewings and lady beetles to exert influence on pests.
Two four d
A common broadleaf herbicide that is highly toxic to tomatoes, causing they to twist and react severely if they receive overspray.
Herbicide resistance
The process where weed populations evolve to metabolize pesticides and no longer be controlled by them due to repeated or excessive applications.
Cut stump application
A management tactic where an invasive plant like mulberry or honeysuckle is physically cut down and Treated with a concentrated herbicide to prevent resprouting.
Pulsicaria
The scientific name for mile a minute, an invasive plant that grows rapidly, has prickles, and can be managed using a specific Asian weevil.
Rhizoecomnus latipides
A small black adult weevil native to Asia that is used as a host-specific biocontrol to feed on mile a minute plants.
Resilient landscapes
Landscapes designed with well-adapted plants that can withstand frequent and intense climate change issues while meeting the needs of the community.
Well adapted plants
Plants that are suited for a specific environment, regardless of whether they are native or non-native, to ensure the long-term success of a functional landscape.
