Emulsions

Drugs dissolved in liquid; does not settle out

dosage form that delivers prescribed amount of drug with each “puff”

Lotions

Emulsions of oil and water plus additional ingredients

Liniments

“balm” applied topically, but then rubbed into the skin to administer the drug

Pastes

Designed to retain their shape at body temperatures

Implants

Solid polymer material that dissolves over months releasing drug

Sustained Release (SR) or Extended Release (XR) forms

Drug released a little at a time over minutes to hours

Ointments/creams

semisolid topical that liquifies at body temp

Tablet/caplet

Solid form of medication

Suppositories

Inserted into rectum and dissolved, releasing drug

Required components of a prescription

• DEA registration number of the DVM

• ID of the animal (name & species)

• Full name and address of client

• # of refills

• Legal signature of the DVM

• Printed name, address, and phone # of the DVM

• Date of tx, Rx, or dispensing of drug

• Drug name and direction for use/regimen

• Any cautionary statements
