Prophet
A messenger of Allah. The Qur’an says there are 25 prophets in Islam, beginning with Adam and ending with Muhammad. Prophets are human beings chosen by God to receive his message on behalf of humankind. The channel of communication is called risalah.
Risalah
The communication channel from God to prophets.
Adam
The first human and first prophet who is known as the father of the human race.
Ibrahim
To have inner knowledge of the one God (Hanif).
Isa
The Islamic name for Jesus, recognized as a prophet and successor of Moses.
Muhammad
The final prophet of Islam, to whom the Qur’an was revealed, and is regarded as the Seal of the Prophets.
Al-Qadr
The Muslim term for predestination, meaning the belief that Allah has set out or predestined the destiny of all things.
Akhirah
The Muslim term for the belief in the Final Judgement and life after death.
Yawm al-din
The Day of Judgement.
Jannah
Heaven, a place of contentment, peace and being with Allah.
Jahannam
Hell, a place of torture and fire away from Allah.
Ummah
Means ‘community’ and refers to the worldwide community of Muslims who share a common religious identity.
Mecca/Makkah
Islam’s holiest city, located in Saudi Arabia. Mecca is the birthplace of the Prophet Muhammad and the place where Islam originated.
Hijab
Often used to describe the headscarf, veil or modest dress worn by many Muslim women.
Burkha
A long, loose fitting garment which covers the whole body from head to feet.
Lesser Jihad
A physical struggle or ‘holy war’ in defence of Islam. This is the struggle to remove evil from society.
Id-Ul-Fitr
Celebration of breaking the fast on the day after Ramadan ends.
The Night of Power/ Laylat Al Qadr
Commemorates the night that the Qur’an was first revealed to the Prophet Muhammad in cave Hira.
