Transubstantiation
The theological term explaining the change of the entire substance of the bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Christ, while the accidents remain.
Accidents
The physical characteristics of the bread and wine, such as appearance, taste, and smell, which remain unchanged after transubstantiation.
Substance
The underlying reality of what something is; in the Eucharist, the substance of bread and wine changes into the substance of Christ's body and blood.
Anamnesis
A Greek word for memorial or remembrance that means making a past event present; used to describe how the Sacrifice of the Mass is the same as the Sacrifice on the Cross.
Paschal Lamb
A title for Jesus that connects Him to the lamb sacrificed during the Jewish Passover, foreshadowing His sacrifice in the Eucharist.
Seder
The ritual meal of the Jewish Passover celebration that Jesus used to institute the Eucharist during the Last Supper.
Todah
A Hebrew word meaning 'thank offering,' which is the root meaning of the word 'Eucharist.'
Decalogue
Another name for the Ten Commandments, which summarize the Law of God.
Faith
A theological virtue needed to live out the 1st Commandment, involving belief in God and all He has revealed.
Heresy
The post-baptismal denial or obstinate doubt of a truth that must be believed with divine and Catholic faith.
Acedia
A form of spiritual sloth or laziness; refusing the joy that comes from God and being repelled by divine goodness.
Adoration
The acknowledgment of God as God, Creator, and Savior, the Lord and Master of everything that exists.
Sacrilege
Profaning or treating unworthily the sacraments and other liturgical actions, as well as persons, things, or places consecrated to God.
Blasphemy
Words uttered against God, inwardly or outwardly, expressing hatred, reproach, or defiance; a violation of the 2nd Commandment.
Contrition
Sorrow of the soul and detestation for the sin committed, together with the resolution not to sin again.
Mortal Sin
A grave infraction of the law of God that destroys charity in the heart of the sinner; requires grave matter, full knowledge, and complete consent.
Seal of Confession
The absolute duty of a priest not to disclose anything that a penitent has confessed to him in the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
Viaticum
Literally meaning 'with you on the way,' it refers to the Eucharist received by a person who is dying as they prepare for the journey to heaven.
FTFF
An acronym for the four elements of spousal love in Theology of the Body: Free, Total, Faithful, and Fruitful.
Natural Family Planning
A practice consistent with Church teaching for achieving or avoiding pregnancy through the observation of fertile and infertile periods.
Contraception
Artificial methods used to prevent pregnancy that are considered counter to the procreative and unitive ends of marriage.
Celibacy
The state of abstaining from marriage and sexual relations for the sake of the Kingdom of God.
Eschatological Sign
A sign, such as consecrated celibacy, that points toward the eternal reality of heaven where they neither marry nor are given in marriage.
Vocation
A call from God to a distinctive state of life, categorized into three types: Marriage, Priesthood/Holy Orders, and Consecrated Religious life.
Apostolic Succession
The uninterrupted transmission of spiritual authority from the Apostles through successive bishops, transmitted through the laying on of hands in Holy Orders.
Discernment
The prayerful process of discovering God's will for one's life and vocation.
Incredulity
The neglect of revealed truth or the willful refusal to assent to it.
Presumption
A sin against hope where one either hopes to save oneself without help from God or hopes to obtain God's forgiveness without conversion.
