Complexity and Contradiction in Architecture

11
New cards

Air Right Transfer

Air rights are the rights property owners have to the space above their site that they are able to build on, up to a certain height. Air right transfers involve the sale or transfer of the unused build space above a property to another property, allowing the buyer or receiver to build up higher than zoning laws would have otherwise allowed.

12
New cards

Zoning Code

Regulations implemented by a municipality or governing body on the construction of buildings in their area of governance. This code outlines the rules behind what is allowed to be built on a site depending on what zoning area it finds itself in.

13
New cards

Rammed Earth Architecture

Architecture that uses the rammed earth construction technique which involved compacted and often combined natural raw materials like earth, chalk, or clay. Example: Marfa Ranch, Texas, Lake Flato, 2022.

14
New cards

Congress of New Urbanism

An organization dedicated to a progressive view of urbanism that centers community and environmental considerations. Educates and advocates to lead varying groups and organizations to adopting their approach to urbanism.

15
New cards

FAR

FAR stands for Floor Area Ratio, a zoning restriction used to control the densely of a city’s architecture. More specifically, it is the ratio between the portion of the lot covered by the first floor of a building and how many floors tall the building can be, meaning that buildings that take up an entire site are not allowed to be as tall as buildings that only take up a quarter of their site.

16
New cards

Postmodernism

An architectural style from the mid to late 20th century that originates from a skepticism of the objectivity of modernism, deemphasizing meaning and prioritizing relativism. Hard to pin down definitionally because of how post-modern structures often work to obfuscate what is “real” about them and from what architectural history they in fact come from. Example: MoPOP, Seattle, Frank Gehry, 2000.

17
New cards

Passive House Standard

A building performance standard based on making a building highly energy efficient and reducing its carbon footprint. This often involves minimal and efficient heating and cooling designs, environmentally conscious materials, and strong insulation.

18
New cards

Glulam

Glued laminated timber, an engineered structural wood product made by bonding layers of dimensional timber such that the wood grain in each layer runs parallel to the member’s length. Can be made into any size and be made up of wood from any size trees, has a strong strength to weight ratio, and is environmentally friendly compared to reinforced concrete or steel.

19
New cards

Cross Laminated Timber

Prefabricated wood panels made by bonding together layers of lumber in an alternating perpendicular fashion that helps create better structural rigidity in the panels. CLT is known for being environmentally conscious, light weight, being prefabricated and having diverse use cases.

20
New cards

POPS

POPS = Privately owned public spaces. Used to describe privately owned sites/buildings that have spaces usable by the public. The inclusion of public spaces in privately owned buildings gives developers zoning allowances like extra square footage or better FAR ratios based on the scale of the public space they create.
