Muslims perform ritual washing (wudu) before they pray by washing faces, hands and feet under cold running water, mosques have two special rooms for this, split into genders, if water isn’t available they can do it with sand or dust, purification helps Muslims to fully focus on God in prayers.

Towards Makkah, in a mosque, mihrab indicates direction of Makkah, small niche in the qiblah wall which is the wall that faces Makkah, use a special compass to pray in the right direction, praying in the same direction means all Muslims are focusing on one place associated with God.

How does prayer work in a mosque?

Many have carpets, giving each person their own space to pray, led by Imam who is positioned at front facing mihrab, men and women pray separately, imam leads prayers from the men’s prayer room but his voice is usually broadcast in the women’s prayer room.

Special communion prayer held Friday at midday, all men expected to visit mosque, imam gives sermon that reminds Muslims about duties to God, must still perform wudu at home, use a prayer mat at home facing Makkah.

Actions of bowing and prostrating remind Muslims that God is greater than them, helps Muslims become closer to God, Muslims were commanded by God to pray, unites Muslims around world who all pray in same way, and motivates them to do God’s good will.
