Communication
The exchange of thoughts, opinions or information by speech, writing or behavior.
Active Listening
Involves the listener providing feedback to the speaker according to the information received.
Noise
Anything which disrupts the communication process.
Non-verbal Communication
Messages sent through body language and facial expressions.
Emotion
A natural instinctive state of mind derived from one's circumstances, mood, or relationships with others.
Fairness
Involves treating all others equally and impartially, requiring listening to all the facts before making decisions.
Vision
The ability to see the big picture of a task; requires the leader to know the end result.
Humility
The ability to give credit to group members for accomplishments and to accept blame for mistakes.
Creativity
Involves being imaginative and thinking outside of the box.
Teamwork
The cooperative action of a group to achieve a goal, involving cooperation and constructive feedback.
Emotional Intelligence
The ability to understand and express one’s own emotions and experience empathy.
Authoritarian Leadership
Requires full authority and control over the group with little input from others.
Participative Leadership
Effective when the leader needs the team to have ownership of decisions.
Laissez-faire Leadership
Involves offering little guidance and entrusting group members to make decisions.
Abdicratic Leadership
Occurs when there is no defined leader, requiring group members to complete tasks independently.
Associate’s Degree
Requires 60 hours of coursework, usually taking two years to complete.
Bachelor’s Degree
Requires 120 hours of coursework, usually taking four years to complete.
Master’s Degree
Advanced degrees earned after a bachelor’s degree; requires at least an additional 30 hours of coursework.
Doctorate Degree
Highest level of degree available, requiring 90 to 120 additional hours of coursework after a bachelor’s degree.
