Ionic Compounds
Compounds that contain ions, usually formed by a reaction between a metal and a non-metal.
Ionic Bond
Electrostatic attraction between positive and negative ions.
Crystal Lattice
An orderly arrangement of ions in an ionic crystal that minimizes potential energy.
Hydrated Crystals
Salts that have water chemically bonded to the ions in the crystal structure.
Trends in Ionic Radii
Describes how ionic size changes with the loss or gain of electrons.
Cation
A positively charged ion that is smaller than its parent atom due to the loss of electrons.
Anion
A negatively charged ion that is larger than its parent atom due to the gain of electrons.
Fajan's Rules
Predicts the covalent character of ionic compounds based on cation charge density and anion polarisability.
Melting Point of Ionic Compounds
Generally high due to strong electrostatic forces between ions.
Electrical Conductivity of Ionic Compounds
They conduct electricity when melted or dissolved in water.
