Protagonist
The protagonist is the central character in a story, who will be engaged in conflict with another character or group of characters.
Antagonist
The antagonist is the person in opposition to the protagonist in a story.
Aside
An aside is a brief comment made by a character alone, or “whispered” to another character on stage, while the other characters pretend not to hear.
Monologue
A monologue is a lengthy speech made by one character to other characters on the stage.
Soliloquy
A soliloquy is a lengthy speech made by one character alone on the stage, or where the other characters pretend not to hear it.
Dramatic Foil
A dramatic foil is a character who highlights or brings out the personality traits of another character in a play, usually through contrast.
Dramatic Irony
Dramatic irony is the contrast between a character’s words or actions have for the character and what the audience or reader knows about those words or actions.
Tragedy
A tragedy is a form of drama in which the main character, known as the tragic hero, experiences a downfall, usually death, either as the result of fate or a character flaw.
Theme
The theme of a literary work is the message about life that that work conveys.
Dramatic Tragedy
A dramatic tragedy is a play in which the central character(s), usually known as a tragic hero(es), experiences a downfall as a result of fate or a tragic flaw in his / her personality, often resulting in death.
Tragic Hero
A tragic hero is a character who is of high social status and is essentially a good person, but who experiences a tragic downfall, often death, as a result of fate or a character flaw.
Symbol
A symbol is a person, place, or thing that has a meaning by itself but is also used to represent something else.
Narrative Poem
A narrative poem is a poem that tells a story.
Repetition
Repetition is the repeated use of a word or phrase close together.
Refrain
A refrain is the same word or phrase appearing in the same location in a stanza multiple times.
Blank Verse
Blank Verse is poetry which does not ryhme but is written in iam pentameter
Iam pentameter
Iambic pentameter is a specifc form of metriical meter made up of five iambs per line. for a total of then syllables per line.
Iamb
an iamb is a unit of poetical meter composed of two syllables. The first syllable is unaccented and the secod is accented
