Just-in-Time (JIT)
A philosophy and integrated system for production management to eliminate waste and enhance efficiency.
Lean Production
A production approach focused on eliminating waste, improving quality, and increasing efficiency.
Muda
Japanese term for waste; refers to anything that does not add value in the production process.
Flexible Resources
Multifunctional workers and general-purpose machines that can perform several tasks in the production process.
Cellular Layouts
Arrangements of manufacturing cells that group dissimilar machines to process a family of parts with similar requirements.
Pull Production System
A system where production is based on customer demand, and workers take only what they need to process immediately.
Kanban
A card used in a Pull Production System to signal production or movement of materials, containing essential information.
Small-lot Production
Producing in small quantities to benefit from reduced space, lower capital investment, and ease in quality detection.
Quick Setups
Separation of internal and external setups to reduce setup times by ensuring readiness before machines begin new operations.
Total Productive Maintenance (TPM)
Combines preventive maintenance with total quality concepts to maximize productivity and involve employees in maintenance.
Supplier Network
Strategic policies involving the location, delivery, and operation of suppliers to optimize manufacturing processes.
Benefits of Lean Production
Includes reduced inventory, improved quality, lower costs, shorter lead times, and increased productivity among other advantages.
