DISCIPLINE OF COMMUNICATION
Focuses on how humans use verbal and non-verbal messages to create meaning in various settings (from 2 persons, groups, mass audiences across nations using a divers sets of networks and media.
The Discipline
is especially interested in the influence of those messages in human behavior
as a discipline, it includes the study of communication in:

Sender
The person who intends to convey the message with the intention of passing information & ideas to others is known as sender or communicator.
Receiver
person who receives the message or for whom the message is meant for

It is the SUBJECT MATTER (topic/content) of the communication.

Feedback
It is the process of ensuring that the receiver has received the message & understood in the same sense as sender meant it.
Intrapersonal Communication

Individual - becomes his/her sender & receiver, providing feedback to him/herself in an ongoing interior process.

Interpersonal Communication
Process by which people echange information, feelings & meaning through verbal & non-verbal messages: it’s a face-to-face communication.
Direct channel
are those that are obvious & can be easily recognized by the receiver.
under the direct control of the sender
Indirect channel
are those that are subliminally/subconsciously recognized by the receiver.
NOT under the direct control of the sender, (e.g., gut feeling, “hunches” or premonitions)
Group Communication
Refers to the nature of communication that occurs in groups (between 3-12 individuals).
Small group comm.
generally takes place in a context that mixes interpersonal comm. interactions with social clustering.
Public Communication
It’s at the heart of our economy, society & politics.
Studios use it to promote their films
Politicians use it to get elected.
Advocacies use it to promote social causes.

Mass Communication
is a process in which a person, group of people, or an org. sends a message through a channel of comm. to a large group of anonymous & heterogenous people & org.
Sender of Message - usually a professional communicator who often represents an org.
Mass Comm. - is an expensive process.
Feedback - is usually slow & indirect.
Channels of comm. - include TV, radio, social media & print.
Communication Specialist
Also known as “Public Relations Specialists”
- they establish positive associations with public & mass media in behalf of their client.
Employed by businesses of all sizes
- they are typically jack of all trades
- particularly good in written comm. as well
Journalism
CORE PURPOSE OF JOURN. - is to research, document, write & present news in an honest, ethical & unbiased way.
Although the method for reporting may be changing, the need for talented, qualified & educated journalists is NOT.
job description - calls for hard work, ethics, quality writing & at its heart-- the desire to TELL THE TRUTH.
