Declaration of Independence
A formal statement declaring the freedom of the thirteen American colonies from British rule, adopted on July 4, 1776.
unalienable rights
Rights that cannot be taken away or denied, such as life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
tyranny
Cruel and oppressive government rule; excessive control by a ruler or government.
the consent of the governed
The authority of a government is derived from the agreement of the people it governs.
abuses and usurpations
Misuses of power and wrongful seizures of authority by a governing body.
despotism
A system of government in which a single entity rules with absolute power.
impel
To drive or urge (someone) to do something.
candid world
An honest and fair perspective from the global community.
legislative powers
The powers granted to a legislative body to make laws.
standing armies
Permanent, professional armies that remain in peacetime.
mock trial
A trial that lacks the legal standards of a legitimate court trial, often seen as a facade.
redress
The remedy or relief provided for a grievance or wrong.
acquiesce
To accept something reluctantly but without protest.
political connection
A relationship or association based on governance and politics.
sacred honor
A moral commitment to uphold one's integrity and principles.
