A character or force that opposes the main character
Flat character
A simple character without a lot of depth
Round character
A complex character with a lot of depth
Dynamic character
A character who changes throughout the story
Static character
A character who does not grow throughout the story
Point of view
The perspective from which a story is told
First person POV
The narrator is a character in the story; uses pronouns “I” and “Me”
Second person POV
The narrator is speaking directly to the reader; uses pronoun “You”
Third person POV
The narrator is not a character in the story, refers to characters as “she,” “him,” “they,” etc
Objective third person POV
The narrator is objective and does not know any characters’ thoughts
Limited third person POV
The narrator knows one character’s thoughts and feelings
Omniscient third person POV
The narrator knows every characters’ thoughts and feelings

Artistic writing, written in meter or verse, which uses descriptive language and literary devices to stir the reader’s imagination and emotion

Stanza
A group of lines in a poem
Meter
Pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables in a line of poetry which creates a rhythm
Tone
The speaker’s attitude toward the subject of the poem
Mood
How the poem makes the reader feel
Literary devices
Tools or techniques used by authors to create a special effect and improve the reading experience
Alliteration
Repeated use of the same first sound at the beginning of words
Hyperbole
Extreme exaggeration
Allusion
A reference to a well-known person, place, event, or work of art.
Imagery
Words used to activate the reader’s senses
Personification
Giving human qualities or capabilities to something that is not human

When reality is the opposite of what logic tells you it should be

A comparison of two things using “like” or “as”

A comparison of two things not using “like” or “as”
Juxtaposition
Two opposites placed next to each other to highlight their differences

A person, place, or thing
Pronoun
Takes the place of nouns to avoid repetition

An action or a state of being
Adjective
Describe nouns or pronouns to make sentences more descriptive
Adverb
Modify adjective, verb, or other adverbs
Article
Tells us whether a noun is general or specific
Conjunction
Allow you to connect different ideas within a sentence

Tells you where or when something exists in relation to something else
Monostich
A stanza consisting of 1 line
